We also support the Young Survival Coalition (YSC). Young Survival Coalition (YSC) is the premier international organization dedicated to the critical issues unique to young women and breast cancer. YSC works with survivors, caregivers and the medical, research, advocacy and legislative communities to increase the quality and quantity of life for women diagnosed with breast cancer ages 40 and under.



Definition of Breast Cancer: Cancer that forms in tissues of the breast, usually the ducts (tubes that carry milk to the nipple) and lobules (glands that make milk). It occurs in both men and women, although male breast cancer is rare.
Breast cancer is second only to lung cancer in cancer deaths among women in the U.S.
An estimated 192,370 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to occur among women in the U.S. during 2009.
In addition to invasive breast cancer, 62,280 new cases of in situ breast cancer are expected to occur among women in the U.S. during 2009.
An estimated 1,910 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in men in the U.S. in 2009.
An estimated 40,170 women in the U.S. will die from breast cancer in 2009.
An estimated 440 men in the U.S. will die from breast cancer in 2009.
One woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every 3 minutes, and one woman will die of breast cancer every 13 minutes in the U.S.
In the U.S., a woman has about a 12%, or 1 in 8, lifetime risk of developing breast cancer.
Only 51.2% of women 40 and older in the U.S. reported having a mammogram in the last year.
Mammography will detect about 80-90% of breast cancers in women without symptoms.
Approximately 5-10% of breast cancers in the U.S. are due to heredity (less than 1% of the general population).
Aside from being a woman, age is the most important risk factor.
